Sunrise Potato is focused on developing varieties for the chip market sector of the economy. Sunrise seeks to develop varieties with a high dry matter content that have low reducing sugars and excellent fry color after medium and long term storage. Coupled with those important traits we add resistance to viruses and late blight from parents with those known traits.
Presently Sunrise has a set of advance clones that are being evaluated across Canada from PEI to Alberta. The numbering of these selections range from SP326 to SP336.
Set of advance selections being evaluated in a commercial field of chipping potatoes.
The initial work done by Sunrise is growing true seed in the greenhouse in pots to select clones with desired tuber shape and size. Normally 4 tubers are retained / selected clone.
True seed origin plants growing in a greenhouse.
These are stored and replanted the following year as 4 hill plots. At the harvest, only the best clones are retained and 20 tubers are stored to be replanted in the following year.
Harvesting 4 hill selections from which 20 tubers are stored for replanting.
From that harvest we retain 40 tubers as seed from the desired selections and 40 tubers are stored in a chip bin at Sunrise for dry matter, sugar and fry quality assessment.
